Highschool of the Dead: Everyone’s Go-To-Zombie Anime Series

Highschool of the Dead is a popular, zombie anime that has been in the mix for a long time. It consists of only one season with 12 episodes, which makes it easier for people to complete the series.

Although this anime comes under the classification of horror genre, it has numerous ecchi scenes, giving the perfect fanservice to its audience. Unfortunately, both the series and manga stopped suddenly due to some unfortunate incidents that we will discuss later in the article.

Summary of Highschool of the Dead

Just like any other zombie movie, this anime started with the sudden appearance of these flesh-eating monsters out of nowhere. The zombie virus started to spread as more people got infected.

The story starts in a high school where a group of quirky teenagers band together to survive against this catastrophe. At the center of this group, is Takashi Komuro, who has the added responsibility of taking care of his best friend’s girlfriend Rei Miyamoto.

Adding to this duo are a kendo club president, a wealthy and bright student, a school nurse, and a certain otaku who has a thing for firearms. To survive, this crew must cooperate. Each day they try to make the best use of their individual abilities because their lives depend on it.

Sudden Haitus of Anime and Manga

The story of Highschool of the Dead was progressing smoothly in the anime and manga when the series went on a long break. Then, series was ultimately canceled when the author Daisuke Sato suffered from a coronary artery disease and passed away.

It was a sad day for anime history as we lost a very talented writer. Although we did not get to see the ending of Highschool of the Dead, the name of Daisuke Sato will continue to live on along with his fantastic work.

Fans’ Reactions

When High School of the Dead first aired, it caused quite an uproar among the anime community. People were excited to see this anime, which had a combination of zombies and ecchi scenes.

The mixture of these two elements was certainly unique at that time. And the show left a good first impression. To this day, a manga series that started in 2006, has continued to pop up in pop culture and various streaming networks, even after 16 years. That’s the kind of effect any budding manga artist wants to create with his/her works, and Daisuke Sato has certainly done.

Will It Ever Continue?

It’s been over a decade since Highschool of The Dead concluded. Since then, fans have been asking the same question: will Highschool of The Dead return to the screen? The answer is no. Even though the series was canceled, there was a small chance of its continuation through the hands of Shouji Satou who worked on the illustration of the story.

But Satou confirmed that he had no plans to bring back the show. In a way, Satou’s decline to finish the show could be viewed as an honor to Daisuke Sato.  Even if Shouji brought it back, there was no way it would have ended the way Daisuke originally wanted. There was nothing wrong with a posthumous show, but I think in this case the fans were okay that the show didn’t continue because Daisuke was the mastermind.

Overall Verdict

If you are looking for a small anime to binge-watch over the weekend filled with drama, action, (and fan service) then this anime is the right choice for you. It is a great series that is packed with a lot of content, and it should definitely have a place on your watchlist. You can stream the show on Hulu.
